The short version

Penang’s beach, in one place

Batu Ferringhi is the resort coast of Penang Island, strung along the north shore about 11 km north-west of George Town. For fifty years it has been the island’s seaside escape: a single beachfront road lined with hotels, seafood restaurants and, after dark, one of Malaysia’s best-known street markets. The name means “Foreigner’s Rock” — a nod to the European traders who first landed on Penang centuries ago.

This guide pulls the whole area together — where to stay, what to do, how to get here and where to eat — and keeps the facts answer-first so you (and the search and AI tools you use) can find them fast.

The night market that never really stopped

As the sun goes down, the beach road becomes the Batu Ferringhi night market — a ribbon of stalls selling T-shirts, watches, leather, shell craft and souvenirs, threaded with hawkers grilling satay and frying char kway teow. It runs roughly 7pm until late, every night, with the smaller Ferringhi Walk bazaar busiest at weekends.

Bring cash, be ready to haggle gently, and arrive early to beat the crowds.

Sun, sea and a bit of adrenaline

The same calm bay that makes Batu Ferringhi good for swimming also makes it Penang’s home of water sports. Operators along the sand have been running parasailing, jet-ski and banana-boat rides here since the 1980s, and most resorts have their own beach booths.

Inland, the hills behind the beach hide the Tropical Spice Garden, a butterfly farm, a fruit farm and a teddy-bear museum — enough to fill the days you are not lying on the sand.

Batu Ferringhi FAQs

Where exactly is Batu Ferringhi?

Batu Ferringhi is a beach town on the northern coast of Penang Island, Malaysia, roughly 11 km north-west of George Town along Jalan Batu Ferringhi (Federal Route 6). It is a 25–40 minute drive from the city, traffic depending.

Is Batu Ferringhi worth visiting?

Yes — it is Penang's main beach resort area and the easiest place on the island to combine sand, sea and water sports with comfortable hotels, sunset dining and a lively night market. It pairs well with a few days of heritage and food in George Town.

How many days do you need in Batu Ferringhi?

Two to three nights is ideal: a day for the beach and water sports, an evening at the night market, and a day for the spice garden, butterfly farm and other inland attractions. Many visitors split a Penang trip between Batu Ferringhi and George Town.

What is Batu Ferringhi called in Chinese?

Batu Ferringhi is written 峇都丁宜 in Chinese. The name itself is Malay for “Foreigner's Rock”, and you will also see it spelled “Batu Feringgi”.

Can you swim at Batu Ferringhi beach?

Yes. The sheltered bay is generally calm and shallow near the shore, which is why it is popular with families. Conditions vary, so follow resort flags and local advice, watch for jet-skis in marked zones, and take normal sea-swimming precautions.
